CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

DEADLINE EXTENSION FOR ABSTRACT PROCESS – NEW DEADLINE MAY 31

OBJECTIVE
The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, the largest multi-professional union in Canada, is seeking submissions of abstracts for the forthcoming Public Science in Canada | Strengthening Science to Protect Canadians Symposium.

Writers from academia, government and civil society are invited to submit an abstract on one of the Symposium themes: "Food and Drugs"; "Water and the Environment"; and, "Energy and Natural Resources" with a focus on one of the following streams. Selected papers will be allocated to one of these streams for delivery in parallel panels.

1. “The Relevance of Public Science”
This panel will explore the relevance of public science for Canadians through case study examples on Energy, Natural Resources, Food, Drugs, Water and the Environment. Discussions will address broad-based lessons learned on how science, policy and decision-making come together to serve Canadians.

2. “Building Support for Public Science in Canada: Building Stronger Science-Policy Links”
This panel will bring policy-makers, scientists and industry and non-profit experts together to discuss ways to improve the connections between science and policy. Elements needed to build support for public science in Canada will be discussed. Presenters will address broad-based lessons across sectors and issue areas.

3. “Media and Science in Canada: Improving the Profile of Public Science”
This panel will explore the relationship between media and science in Canada. Discussions will deal with challenges and opportunities to improve the profile of public science. Presenters will address lessons learned and provide recommendations for scientists, policy-makers, members of the media or the public at large regarding improving the profile of public science.

ABSTRACTS
Prospective authors are invited to submit abstracts by May 31, 2007. Abstracts (prepared in English or French) should be limited to approximately 200-300 words and should include a short title, paper abstract as well as the names of all authors and their affiliations.

Please submit documents in Word or PDF formats. Electronic submissions should have the Subject line Science 2007 Abstract and should be addressed to:
                                      Public Science Symposium Program Committee

Authors will be notified of abstract acceptance by June 15, 2007.

FINAL PAPER DETAILS
The final papers should not exceed 10,000 words in length at 12 point Times New Roman Font.

Papers must be received by July 25, 2007 for review by the Program Committee.

Selected authors will be invited to present their papers in the language submitted during the Public Science in Canada | Strengthening Science to Protect Canadians Symposium. Authors will be allocated a 15 minute presentation as part of a panel of discussants on a theme similar to that addressed by their paper. Final papers will also be compiled and provided to all attendees along with the final Symposium report.

All presenters must register & pay at a reduced registration fee of CDN $450 + GST = CDN $477.
